Nobody reads 555 of anything, and a wall of filler is not much use when you are staring at the box trying to think of something. This version explains how Notes actually work — including the character limit that shapes everything — with a smaller set of examples that are worth using.
Instagram Notes are short messages that appear at the top of your inbox for 24 hours. Your followers who follow you back, or your close friends list, can see them and reply privately.
The constraint that matters: 60 characters. That is roughly ten words. Every good note is built around that limit rather than fighting it.
How to post one
- Open Instagram and go to your inbox — the messages icon.
- Tap your profile picture at the top, under Your note.
- Type up to 60 characters.
- Choose who can see it: Followers you follow back or Close friends.
- Tap Share.
To remove one before it expires, tap your note and choose Delete note.
What makes a note work
Notes are read in a strip of a dozen others, in about a second each. What survives that:
- Something to reply to. A question gets responses; a statement does not. That is the entire difference between a note that starts a conversation and one nobody reacts to.
- Specific over general. “Recommend me a horror film” beats “bored”.
- Current. Notes expire in a day, so they can be about today in a way a post cannot.
- Short enough to read at a glance. Well under the limit is better than exactly at it.

The pattern across all of these is the same: end with something a person can answer in one tap or one line.
Privacy worth knowing
- Notes are not public. Only mutual followers, or your close friends list, see them.
- Replies are private, arriving as direct messages.
- They expire after 24 hours and are not stored on your profile.
- They can be screenshotted, like anything else. Expiring is not the same as private.
To stop seeing someone’s notes without unfollowing: tap and hold their note and choose to mute notes from them.
If Notes are missing
- Update the app. The usual reason.
- Check your account age and region. Some features roll out gradually.
- Restart the app and sign out and back in.
- Check you have mutual followers. With none, the feature has nobody to show notes to.

How many characters can a note be?
60, including spaces and emoji. Emoji frequently count as more than one character, so a note packed with them fits fewer words than you expect.
Who can see my note?
Either followers you follow back, or your close friends list — whichever you choose when posting. Nobody else.
Can I see who has viewed my note?
No. There is no viewer list. You only see people who reply.
Can I post more than one note?
No. A new note replaces the previous one.
Why can I not see anyone’s notes?
You only see notes from mutual followers who have posted one in the last 24 hours. An empty strip usually means nobody has, or the app needs updating.
