ChatGPT no longer works on WhatsApp. OpenAI’s WhatsApp service — the one you reached by messaging 1-800-ChatGPT — was shut down on 15 January 2026. This was not OpenAI’s decision: Meta changed the WhatsApp Business rules to forbid third-party conversational AI on the platform. Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity, Luzia and Poke were removed for the same reason.
This page has been rewritten to explain what happened, how to recover your chat history, and what to use instead. The build-your-own-bot instructions it previously carried no longer work and would breach WhatsApp’s terms, so they have been removed.
What happened
OpenAI launched ChatGPT on WhatsApp in December 2024. You added 1-800-242-8478 as a contact and chatted with ChatGPT the same way you would message anyone else. No app, no account required to start, and it worked on any phone that could run WhatsApp. It reached more than 50 million people.
In late 2025 Meta revised the WhatsApp Business Solution terms to prohibit general-purpose AI assistants from operating through business accounts. That closed the route for every third-party assistant at once. OpenAI announced the wind-down and the service stopped working on 15 January 2026.
The reason matters for anyone thinking about a workaround: this is a platform policy decision, not a technical limitation and not a bug. There is no setting to change and no region where it still works.
Getting your chat history back
If you used ChatGPT on WhatsApp, your conversations are not necessarily lost. OpenAI provided a path to carry them across by linking the phone number you used to a ChatGPT account.
- Sign in to chatgpt.com, or install the ChatGPT app for iOS or Android.
- In your account settings, link the phone number you used on WhatsApp.
- Conversations from the WhatsApp service appear in your ChatGPT history once the number is verified.
If you never linked the number and the service has already closed, that history is gone. There is no way to export it from WhatsApp in a form ChatGPT can read.
What to use instead
The ChatGPT app
The direct replacement, and better than the WhatsApp version was in almost every respect:
- iOS and Android — free, with voice conversation, image input and file uploads that the WhatsApp bridge never supported.
- Web — chatgpt.com in any browser.
- Desktop — apps for Windows and macOS.
The trade-off is real but small: you install one more app, and in exchange you get conversation history that syncs across devices, the ability to work with documents and images, and no message-length limits imposed by a chat platform.
Meta AI, if you want something inside WhatsApp
Meta’s own assistant remains available in WhatsApp, because the rule change was about third-party AI. It is not ChatGPT and does not use OpenAI’s models, but it is there without installing anything.
Other assistants
Google Gemini, Anthropic’s Claude and Microsoft Copilot all have their own mobile apps. None of them operate through WhatsApp any more either — the same Meta policy applies to all of them.
What about building your own WhatsApp bot?
This page used to describe wiring ChatGPT into WhatsApp yourself using automation platforms. Do not do this now.
The WhatsApp Business Solution terms prohibit using business accounts to provide general-purpose conversational AI. That applies whether the assistant is OpenAI’s, someone else’s, or one you assembled from an API key and an automation tool. The likely outcome is the business account being banned, and on WhatsApp a ban of a number is difficult to reverse.
Automated messaging on WhatsApp is still allowed for what the Business API was designed for: order updates, appointment reminders, customer service flows, notifications people opted into. The line Meta drew is around open-ended assistants, not around automation.
Be careful with third-party apps and browser extensions still advertising “ChatGPT for WhatsApp”. Some are simply out of date. Others ask for your WhatsApp Web session, which hands over full access to your account and every message in it. A tool cannot deliver what the platform forbids, so anything claiming otherwise is either broken or worse.
Was it private while it lasted?
Worth being clear about, because it is a common misunderstanding that outlived the service.
WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption protected messages in transit between you and the recipient. When the recipient was a business account — which is what 1-800-ChatGPT was — the message was decrypted at the other end so that the business could read and act on it. Your messages to ChatGPT were readable by OpenAI, exactly as they would be in the app.
End-to-end encryption never meant “the other party cannot read it”. It meant nobody in between could.

OpenAI does not operate an official assistant on other messaging platforms either. Third-party bots exist on Telegram and elsewhere, but they route your messages through an operator you have no relationship with. If you would not paste the text into a stranger’s website, do not send it to an unofficial bot.
I paid for a service that promised ChatGPT on WhatsApp. What now?
Ask for a refund — the service cannot legitimately be delivered any more. If the seller refuses, a card chargeback for a service that cannot be provided is a reasonable next step.
